Hell, Disney owns ABC. Disney, the folks who make cartoons about princesses of every race and background.. but have never had a movie featuring a black or hispanic main character. The day that us white folks won our freedom from a bunch of other white folks... and kept our own slaves for almost another hundred years and kept stealing land from locals for longer than that? Each of those holidays has something for us to be genuinely proud of, don't get me wrong. But they aren't in any way inclusive of any race but white.. so how are all of those not white pride days? 7) "If we had White History Month .....We'd be racists. If we had any organization for only whites to 'advance' OUR lives, .....We'd be racists." We do. Ever apply for a college scholarship? There are THOUSANDS of organizations to provide assistance for educaton for people from just about every ethnic and religious and national background. 90% of those backgrounds are for white kids. Catcholic, Irish, Italian, the DAR etc. Others are not specific in race at all. There are plenty for example for single mothers, and for women in general. In fact, come to think of it, you women get special treatment all the time. You dont have to register for the draft, there are organizations and laws meant just to protect you and your rights... as a white man should I be pissed off at you for all the 'special treatment' you're getting? Nope, I just realize that pretty much everything in this whole society is built by and for people exactly like me... white boys. 8) "There are over 60 openly-proclaimed Black-only Colleges in the US , yet if there were 'White-only Colleges' .....THAT would be a racist college." I agree. There used to be white only colleges, hell all of them used to be. And that was racist. Now its racism going the other way and I think it's wrong. It is also an understandable reaction to hundreds of years of not having any colleges at all, so I say lets be patient. >IF< we lived in a society where race, gender, or sexual or religious orientation was in no way a factor in determining people's opportunities then none of these organizations would need to exist. But for the time being, they do. I don't think they should last however. Actually, let me revise that. I believe that ANY PRIVATE ORGANIZATION should be able to include and exclude whoever they want from their group. There SHOULD be all white groups AND all black groups AND all women's groups (are girl's schools sexist, or catholic schools discriminatory?). But I don't think that they should receive any public assistance or recognition. Public is public and private is private. Having a semi-private thing is like having see-through underwear..... there's just no damn point. 9) "In the Million-Man March, you believed that you were marching for your race and rights. If we marched for our race and rights, .....You would call us racists." Mostly I would call us stupid. Our race has all the rights that they were marching for. The only thing that we as a race have left to march for is to lose some damn weight. But when we announce our white pride .....You call us racists." Mostly because groups like the KKK and similar people have gotten to the whole "White Pride" thing first. It's kinda like how if you walk into work tomorrow feeling really happy and tell everybody that you are "Gay"... everybody is going to assume that you're a homosexual. Another group basically has a monopoly on the term and you know not to use the term unless you want to be associated with that group. As for actually being proud of our race... there's a lot to be proud of, we've accomplished a lot. There's also a hell of a lot to be guilty for. Personally I think racial pride is a little hard for us to understand as most of us don't know what it is like to have to band together against an outside oppressor. The universe is harsh. Life is harsh. Life cannot arise and continue except by the deaths of other living beings. That's reality. (Hello! You KILL living beings when you EAT them! They don't grow out of the ground in plastic wrap and cardboard boxes!) This world is the realm of the demiurge, the Architect, to put it in pop terms of the Matrix movies. Survival of the fittest, kill or be killed, is now, always has been and always will be, the way this universe operates. That's too real, too harsh, for the frail minds and spines of many of my fellow white European Americans. That is why they cow-tow to whining blacks, Indians, and Chicanos who think they deserve a free ride. Why are modern Whites held accountable for slavery. I never owned a slave. Nor is any black currently living a slave. That engine should have ran out of steam a long time ago. Give it up, if you are black AND on the bottom of the barrel it is your own damn fault, not some White persons. There are plenty of Whites who are screwed up too, but they have no one convenient to blame. Blacks need to take responsibilty for their actions. You are not a crack head OR an unwed mother of five because your great-great-great-great grandmother came here on a slave ship.This is your lot in life because of your own lousy choices. And it absolutely the truth... there should be a White pride parade, a White tv network. Why do blacks have their own. Seems like they are the ones who want to be SEPERATE more then Whites. And these actions by Blacks keep the fires of racial hatred burning more then any White person's behaviour. |

They moved onto the next question without a response to me. I was about 9 at the time. Ever since then ive kept my eyes open to all the disgusting racism directed toward myself and the entire white race. But ive NEVER been afraid to tell the blacks, mexicans or whatever the hell they are that my blond hair, blue eyes and white skin will still be here long after you animals have killed off all you own race. |

Please read past the first few lines, I am really not trying do disrespect anybody here, although it may seem that way at first. "White" isn't an ethnic group. There is no collective history, culture, music, art, that belongs to "white" people. I would not say I am proud to be "white" because that implies that I am only proud of not belonging to any ethnic group. What kind of person is proud not to belong to a group? Only those with hostility towards the groups they are so proud not to be a part of (think about it). BUT that does not mean that us "white" folks have to be ashamed, or can not celebrate our heritage same as anyone else. I can say loudly and proudly that I am of German heritage. I can also be proud of my Italian grandmother (although whether that counts as "white" or "brown" is certainly up to individual taste). My husband may look "white" but that man is German/Irish and proud of it. My other roommate, also "white" for those of you who care, is proud to be of Lithuanian stock, thank you very much. For the record, I did apply for a scholarship from the National Italian American Foundation, of which there are several available to those of Italian decent or those studying Italian language or culture (https://www.niaf.org/scholarships/index.asp) I believe there are other organizations that give scholarships based on heritage from any number of European countries. There are also many scholarships available based on where you live now, or where you went to high school, usually by town or county. If you don't know your cultural heritage (or even if you do), I suggest you talk to your grandparents (if you are lucky enough to be able to do that still). Also,librarians are really easy to talk to and love to help people look up immigration records, birth and death certificates and other information that can help most people find out who their ancestors were, what they did for a living and other fun things to know about your family. One of the reasons that you see "black" used as an ethnic group in this country is that this kind of information is just not available for those who were brought over as slaves. If I want to know what date my grandmother immigrated, what her parents first names where, what they did for a living, and what her home town was before coming to America, I can get all that information off the immigration records. It is easier than you would think. The librarians are so nice to those of us who wander in and say "this is what I want to know, but I don't have a clue where to start looking". If the descendents of slaves want this information, they are flat out of luck. Seriously, I am sure many people of African heritage would love to be able to learn about the music and culture of the specific area where their great grandparents lived. The equivalent for me would be learning about Siracusa, Sicily. Sicilian food and music and history are a tiny bit different than say, Irish food, music, and history. Most descendents of slaves can't do this. The whole continent of Africa is as close as they can get, which is sad. That is why, for practical reasons, "black" is passed off as an ethnic group in this country, while "white" really isn't. In a perfect world, "black" wouldn't pass muster either. Those cultural organizations geared towards Asians and Latinos are kind of a middle ground. They know where they specifically come from, and are proud of it, but sometimes group together. I encourage all you "white" folks to go to the next public "Asian" or "Hispanic" celebrations you hear about. Ask one of your Asian or Hispanic friends to take you along if you are uncomfortable just going on your own. You will most likely find A) that you are welcome there, as is anyone who enjoys the food/music ect. available and B) once inside, the focus is not on "Asian" but on Vietnamese food, Japanese poetry, Korean music, or whatever specific cultural traditions are being shared by group members. B is important. Members of white pride groups are not actually proud of where they came from, they only feel threatened by those they perceive as "outsiders" and are trying to defend themselves from the perceived threat. They don't usually celebrate their pre-American heritage because they would like to forget that we are all immigrants or children of immigrants, with the exception of the Native American folks I know. Hey, while you are out sampling the wonderful variety of cultural celebrations out there, don't forget to stop by a Pow-Wow. There are a ton of them held in the summer, and everyone is welcome to come see the native crafts, food and dancing. In the email my friend sent me there was a list of percieved unfairness, about how people who say they are proud to be white are perceved as "racist" unfairly. Iwill try to address what I find troubling about them one by one. If you disagree with me, you are of course entitled to your opinion and further more I would love to hear what you think is wrong with my arguments. Maybe if we all keep talking, we can find a consensus, or at least understand each other better, even if we agree to disagree. 1) There are African Americans, Mexican Americans.... and then just Americans. Right. "Americans" are all those people. African, Mexican, German, Native.... lumped all together we call them "Americans" if you would prefer to be referred to in a more specific way, by all means set us straight. Or Kinko's will make you a T-shirt. Make one that says "Proud to be a ____-American" German, Italian, Irish, 5th generation, whatever you want to tell the world. It's all good. Or just get one that says "Proud to be an American", any American can wear one, regardless of hyphenation. 2) You pass me on the street.... Seriously, People sneer at you and call you names on the street and "that’s OK"??? Wow. I am sorry to hear that. I am lucky enough never to have been assaulted, verbally or otherwise. For what its worth, I don't think this kind of name calling is OK, no matter who it is directed at. Do you know these people? If it continues, I advise you to try going to the authorities, because it is NOT OK. 3) But when I call you..... The American Heritage Dictionary defines racism as: The belief that race accounts for differences in human character or ability and that a particular race is superior to others. Discrimination or prejudice based on race If you are calling people names like this, I am afraid you do fit the definition for a racist. Even if it is in retaliation for #2, it is not acceptable. It is not all people of that ethnic group who are behaving in this horrid manner, just those individuals. It is NOT OK for them to do this, but don't lower yourself to their level. If they are calling you "honkey" or any of that, then they are racist. In an ironic twist, race has absolutely no impact on weather you are a racist. Just because other people steal, murder or are otherwise disrespectable does not mean it is OK for you to act this way. Ask your mother, she will back me up on this one. 4) You say that whites commit a lot of violence.... Sadly, people of all colors commit violence, against their own group and against other groups. This really has nothing to do with why the ghettos are dangerous. They are dangerous because they are desperately poor. When you are cold and hungry, when you can't afford medical care for yourself or your kids, well it tends to make a person mean. Think back to your own life and remember a time when you were physically uncomfortable: cold, sun burnt, sick, whatever. What was your overall patience level, and demeanor towards those around you? Maybe not at its best? It is not an excuse, but it is a fact of life. Not all people react this way to physical stress, but many do and that is one why there is more crime in poorer neighborhoods. But poor is not confined to one ethnic group. It is not a white vs black thing, it is a poor vs wealthy thing. This happens in poor neighborhoods of every persuasion, more so in cities than rural areas, just because the numbers. If you have 300 people living in a square mile, what are the odds of there being some bad apples, as compared to rural areas? 5) You have the United Negro College Fund..... Like I said, I applied for an Italian America scholarship, and there are others for different European-American groups. I believe there are scholarships given to members of all kinds of clubs, including probably any "white pride" groups you may belong to. Look into it. As far as the celebrations go, what about Columbus Day? Washington's Birthday? not "white" enough for you? Do you really feel left out or threatened by Yom Hashoah and Kawanza? You can come to my house where we celebrate something we like to call "Christmas". I think its going main stream, and even the stores are carrying some Christmas related items now (please excuse my sarcasm I couldn't help myself, aint none of us perfect). 6) You have NAACP and BET, if we had WET....... Well, I do see BBC on my television listings. Plus, there is a channel all about ranching and farming, I watched it for an hour once and I didn't see any black folks. 7) If we had White Pride Day... Please see above for clarification on why "white" is not an ethnic group. There are many celebrations of various European cultures. Or visit an Oktoberfest near you, its like German Pride Day, plus, there is beer. 8) We have Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.....Wonder who Pays for that? The chamber of commerce is a privately organized group of business people, who promote business interests in their region. They don't tend to be publicly funded. If you would like to start a White Chamber of Commerce in your home town, all you would need to do is get all the white business owners in town to organize one with you. Good luck. You may be regarded as a racist if you choose to discriminate based on race (See #3). A better idea (if you own a business') is to go to your local Black Chamber of Commerce if there is one, and ask to join. Who knows, they might let you. If not, you may correctly conclude that they are discriminating on the basis of race, and think less of them with my blessings. 9) If we had a college fund that only gave white students.... Since any private club or organization is free to lend or give money however they chose, I am sure that there are many scholarships out there for "Whites" only. They are likely perceived as racist. If you don't mind, by all means, apply. 10) There are over 60 openly proclaimed Black only Colleges in the US... I searched, but I couldn't find any. Can you name one of these "blacks only" collages so I can look into it? I found several listings for "historically black colleges" and "predominately black colleges" but no accredited US colleges that restrict enrollment by race. I rather suspect that most of the thousands of colleges not listed as historically or predominately black are historically and predominantly white.. Census data is available for most colleges, so if you prefer to attend a college with a high number of white people, or males, or whatever, you can do your research and find one. 11) If we marched for our race and rights.... If you feel that you are being discriminated against, or your rights are trampled on, you have the right to gather and engage in non-violent protest. Just make sure you articulate exactly what you are protesting, and so long as it is not racist, you won't be perceived as one. I am not sure what cultural background you come from or what rights you feel have been kept from you, so I can't be more specific. If you are talking about marching to celebrate "whites" in general, you might run into some problems. Try organizing a parade to celebrate something more specific, like your specific European heritage, or our founding fathers (4th of July would be good) and you will get more support. 12) You rob us, car jack us and shoot at us.... Hmm, sounds like an "us vs them" mentality if I ever heard one. If you are insinuating that people with dark skin steal and are violent, while people with light colored skin are moral, well you might be a racist. See numbers 3 and 4 above. 13) Why is it that only whites can be racist? People of any color can be racist. There are plenty of African American racists, Asian American racists... all kinds. And they all think it is their race against everyone else. The funny thing is, that an African American racist can hate Asian Americans or other ethnic folks and vice versa, it's very equal-opportunity. If racist is the way you were brought up, it can be very hard to break free of that thinking. It can be scary to move outside your comfort level and reach out to someone as an individual rather than as a representative of a hostile group. Sometimes that individual might actually be hostile, but most of the time they aren't. It is really up to each person to decide if they want to make the |
